Pendennis Castle Castles
The land on which the castle stands was originally owned by the Killigrew family, governors of Pendennis. The lodgings fronting the 'keep' were added to provide more comfortable accommodation. In 1598, during Elizabeth I's reign, a new type of defensive wall was added around the original fort. Strengthened again prior to the Civil War, Pendennis was host to the future Charles II in 1646.
The castle's fascinating history is brought to life through many interesting highlights. For example, the Noonday Gun is fired every day at noon during July and August. You can also visit the secret defences, including the World War II Half Moon Battery. Then there's the Guardhouse, which has been returned to its World War I appearance, the hands-on Discovery Centre, a 16th-century keep complete with Tudor gun deck and don't forget the underground magazines and tunnels. There really is so much to do whatever your age. It's a fascinating day out for all the family. .
