The Monument was erected by order of parliament to perpetuate the remembrance of the dreadful fire of London in 1666; and the rebuilding of the city in Charles II's reign, under the inspection of Sir Christopher Wren. It is built on the east side of Fish Street Hill, in a small square, open to the street. It is on the ground whereon stood the parish church of St. Margaret.

The fluted Doric column stands 202 feet high, and you can climb the 311 steps to a plaform at the summit for some fine views, and receive a certificate as proof!
