Shire Hall Houses
One of the best-preserved and hardest-working Castles in the country, Lancaster Castle is managed by Lancashire County Council and used as Courts and Prison. Within the Shire Hall there is a splendid display of over 600 shields bearing the arms of all the Sovereigns of England, and of all the Constables of Lancaster Castle and High Sheriffs of Lancashire known to have borne arms. This fascinating collection has aroused the interest of many visitors to the Shire Hall in the study of the decorative and absorbing art and science of heraldry.
