Orford Castle Castles
This unique polygonal keep survives almost intact. It was built between 1165 and 1173 by Henry II to help control the barons of Norfolk and Suffolk. The castle was built to a highly innovative design, and the progress of its construction is detailed in royal documents.
Recent archaeological work has provided a clearer understanding of how the castle worked, and a new painting by Frank Gardiner shows how the keep, together with the lost outer defences, would have looked.
