Availability: Weekdays from March - July and September - October. Book at least three months in advance. Weather: The weather should not affect this experience but if conditions are extreme, please contact the station before leaving home. Duration: Lasts for around seven hours, starting at 9am. Numbers On Day: Share the experience with five other participants, taking it in turns to be on the footplate. Spectators: Up to three guests over the age of 16 are welcome to ride in the train's carriage. Dress Code: Stout footwear and a cotton overall or boilersuit must be worn. Trainers are not acceptable. Dress comfortably in clothing that fully covers the arms and legs. Guidelines: Take the A31 from either the M3 or A34. The A31 is the main Guildford to Winchester trunk road. Alresford station is signposted, follow the brown tourist signs to the Watercress Line. Restrictions: Minimum age is 16, maximum is 75. No experience is necessary but participants must be fit enough to climb up to the footplate from ground level. Mobility needs must be stated when booking. Other Info: Each participant receives a voucher for one day train travel over the whole Mid Hants Railway (valid for 12 months).

Then climb up onto the footplate to fire and drive one of the larger locomotives over a breathtaking 20 miles of railway through the Hampshire countryside. Haul a full train of carriages for the entire length of this steeply graded line, enjoying 10 miles as driver and 10 miles as fireman. And to keep yourselves fuelled, receive tasty lunch along the way. This is the ultimate footplate experience for steam train enthusiasts.
