Thornton Abbey and Gatehouse Houses
This abbey, founded in 1139 for a community of Augustinian canons, was reconstructed from the 1260s onwards as its prestige and riches grew. The remains of a beautiful octagonal chapterhouse are notably fine. Most impressive, though, is the 14th-century gatehouse, recognised as one of the grandest in Europe. .
