Castle Howard really is a magical place that has something for everyone, with many visitors returning time and time again. Set dramatically between two lakes, this 18th-century palace designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, is one of England's most beautiful historic houses. It has been the home to the Howard family ever since is was built.

Visit the House at your own pace while friendly and informative guides share with you stories of the house and family. View the collections gathered by succeeding generations, which include furniture, paintings, porcelain and statuary.

The Gardens and Park are breathtaking throughout the seasons and, with many diverse areas to explore, visitors can find peace and tranquillity whichever path they choose.

Visitors can enjoy extensive walks through woodlands, formal gardens, along terraces or beside water, and view the buildings and sculptures in the landscape. Memorable sights include the Atlas Fountain, the Temple of the Four Winds, the Mausoleum and New River Bridge.

With its romantic Italianate trellises, a backdrop of hornbeam hedges and the brick red walls, the Rose Gardens are a sheltered paradise of colour and intoxicating perfume.

The House is open daily 1 March until 6 November 2005 from 11.00am (last admissions 4.00pm).

The Gardens, Park and Adventure Playground open daily throughout the year from 10.00am (last admissions 4.30pm, closing at 6.30pm or dusk).

The Stable Courtyard shops, cafe and plant centre open daily throughout the year from 10.00am until 5.00pm.
