Set amid woodland below the escarpment of the North York Moors and the Cleveland Way National Trail, the ruins of this 14th-century monastery represent the best preserved charterhouse of the 10 Carthusian monasteries in Britain. This is England's most important Carthusian ruin. The individual cells reflect the hermit-like isolation of the monks; a reconstruction enables visitors to see the austere and simple furnishings.
