Vernacular buildings - the houses and workplaces of past generations - are disappearing every day from the landscape. In the Chilterns, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on London's doorstep, the pressures are particularly great. Chiltern Open Air Museum preserves and interprets the built heritage of the Chilterns that would otherwise be lost.
Step back in time and get a feel of the forties in our fully furnished prefab or experience 50 AD at the Iron Age House or walk into a picture of our rural past at the farm.
Come and explore our historic buildings. Saved from demolition and moved piece by piece to our country setting, it's hard to imagine that our collection of barns, granaries and even the tin chapel have ever been anywhere else!
Our collection of more than 30 buildings are deliberately grouped. They include a working nineteenth century farmyard and a village with its green, cottages, forge and chapel. .
