Grimes Graves Museums
Grimes Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. First named Grim's Graves by the Anglo-Saxons, after the pagan god Grim, it was not until some of them were excavated in 1870 that they were found to be flint mines dug over 5,000 years ago. The mines provided the flint to make tools. Today, visitors can descend 10 metres (30 feet) by ladder into one excavated shaft. This is also a site of Special Scientific Interest, as it is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.
