Wimbledon Tennis Championships

Wimbledon Tennis Championships
The oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world

The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and considered the most prestigious in the sport. Taking place over two weeks in late June and early July, it is included in the four Grand Slam tournaments in tennis, and the only tournament that is still played on grass.

Spectators at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships are treated to world-class tennis by top sportsmen and women, including Andy Murray, Britain's favourite, Roger Federer and Serena Williams amongst others. The new rectractable roof was built in time for the 2009 championship to ensure that the typically British rain does not stop play. Applications for tickets always exceed the amount that are available, and applicants are chosen at random for this prestigious event. However, the tournament is the only grand slam event where fans can queue up and get access to some 500 allotted tickets for the events, although it is not uncommon to queue up overnight to secure these tickets.

Racing begins at Temple Island, where two crews go head to head on either the 'Bucks' (Buckinghamshire) or 'Berks' (Berkshire) side of the river, with the finishing line upstream at Henley Bridge. Spectators watching the Henley Regatta can watch the racing action at numerous locations along the banks of the River Thames, although viewing opportunities at the Bucks side can be limited to invitation only in some areas. With over 8,500 competitors taking place in numerous races over the racing calendar, the Solent becomes a mass of boats of all classes as competitors take to their boats and yachts. Over 100,000 spectators attend Cowes Week, especially for the onshore events that take place, including parties, live music, and festivals that accompany the event, which culminates with a spectacular fireworks display.
