140000 visitors turn up for Turner Prize

Gateshead's Baltic Gallery has attracted 140,000 visitors to see pieces of art produced for this year's Turner Prize.

A whopping 140,000 visitors passed through the doors of the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead for this year's Turner Prize, the BBC has reported.

Amongst this year's entries are works by the winning sculptor Martin Boyce, consisting of artificial trees and a litter bin, Karla Black, painter George Shaw and video artist Hilary Lloyd.

This is only the second time the Turner Prize has been hosted outside of London - it previously took place at the Tate Gallery in Liverpool in 2007. The prize exhibition normally takes place at the Tate Britain gallery in London. The prize will now be held in a different city on alternate years, with the remaining years taking place in London.

The prize is awarded to a British artist under 50 years of age judged to have produced the best piece of art, with an award of £25,000 being given to the winner of the prestigious competition.
