According to Variety, 33 Days will begin filming in summer 2013 in French and Spanish.

The film is said to focus on the time Picasso spent producing the Guernica mural and his relationship with his lover, Dora Maar.

Banderas told Spanish paper El Pais that Picasso 'deserves a lot of respect', saying he was born four blocks from where the artist was born.

Banderas went on to say Picasso was 'a character that has pursued me for a long time'.

No stranger to art biopics, Banderas was in a movie about Frida Kahlo, filmed in 2002, acting opposite Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina.

The last time Picasso was portrayed on screen was by Marcial Di Fonzo Bo in Woody Allen's 2010 film, Midnight in Paris.
