Actor and broadcaster Stephen Fry is to return to the stage in his first major role for 17 years, appearing in Twelfth Night at London's Globe in September.

Playing Malvolio by the side of the Globe's former artistic director Mark Rylance, Fry will perform in the three-week run beginning on 22 September.

In 1995, Fry fled to Belgium after walking out during a West End production of Simon Gray's Cell Mates, claiming his actions were due to stage fright.

He later blamed fleeing on his bipolar disorder.

'Walking out of the play at the beginning of its West End run Fry vanished,' states the biography section of Fry's official website, 'contemplating suicide, he disappeared off to Belgium. The experience still haunts him but the depression has now faded to embarrassment and the anger to forgiveness.'

Rylance was the Globe's artist director from its opening in 1995 to 2005. Well known for directing and acting in plays every season, Rylance often explored Elizabethan theatre practises.

In the Twelfth Night, Rylance will play the role of Olivia as he did in the Globe's 2002 production. This year's staging will be performed by an all male cast once more.

Liam Brennan and Peter Hamilton will be reprising their roles as Orsino and jester Feste respectively.
