Google Street View delayed by objectors

Guernsey's Google Street View service has been delayed after the vehicle was vandalised by objectors.

Islanders on Guernsey have voiced strong objections to Google street map picturing the island and invading their privacy. Two of the Google camera cars were vandalised on their second visit to the island last summer and filming had to be suspended.

Resident complaints have meant that no date has yet been set for the Guernsey street map to go live whereas the Jersey version, also filmed last summer, went online on Wednesday and the island's data protection authorities have received no complaints from residents.

Guernsey authorities are said to be in discussion with Google regarding residents who do not wish their homes to feature on the plan.

Peter Harris, data protection commissioner, said island residents have not been the only ones objecting. He said: 'It's a question of culture; I mean Google comes from the USA where perhaps views on privacy are different from those in Western Europe.

They were filming a lot in Germany and there was a huge fuss about their collection of data there as well.'
