A musical adaptation of The Bodyguard, which starred the late Whitney Houston, is to open in the West End this winter, its producers have confirmed.

The project has been planned since last year, however its commercial success is undoubted now singer Whitney Houston has died. Thriller Live, the Michael Jackson tribute show, enjoyed mild success upon opening until the singer's death. The show was scheduled to close in May 2009 but is still on West End this year.

Tony and Grammy award-winner Heather Headley has been cast to play singer Rachel Marron - originally played by Houston. The plot tells the story of the relationship between Marron and her bodyguard, who was played by Kevin Costner in the 1992 film.

The musical will cover some of Houston's most successful songs including I Will Always Love You.

American playwright Alex Dinelaris has written the show, which is said to deviate from the original film's plot. Thea Sharrock has been named as director and David Ian and Michael Harrison are to produce.

Further news for The Bodyguard has not been announced.
