Inspector Clouseau boss Herbert Lom dies

Pink Panther star and veteran actor Herbert Lom has died at the age of 95.

The veteran actor and star of the Pink Panther films Herbert Lom has died at the age of 95.

His family said the actor had died peacefully in his sleep this morning (27 September).

The Czech-born actor was a member of Austrian nobility. He was based in London and appeared in more than 100 films including Spartacus, El Cid and The Lady killers.

His most famous role was that of French Police Chief Charles Dreyfus in the 1964's film 'A Shot In The Dark', where he played the increasingly unstable boss of the incompetent Inspector Clauseau, played by comedy actor Peter Sellers.

His career has spanned over five decades and he has appeared alongside Hollywood stars such as Kirk Douglas, Sir Alec Guinness and Charlton Heston.

The actor escaped from Prague in 1939 due to the impending Nazi occupation and started his acting career with appearances in many British films throughout the 1940's. Normally typecast as a villainous character he later moved into some comedy roles including his roles in the Pink Panther movies.

The 1960's were the most successful decade for the actor starting with Spartacus in 1960, El Cid and Mysterious Island in 1961. Lom received top billing in the Hammer Films' remake of The Phantom of the Opera in 1962.
