Larry Hagman, who played TV crook JR Ewing in the hit series Dallas has died at the age of 81, his family have announced.

Hagman had suffered from cancer and cirrhosis of the liver, and passed away in Dallas hospital on Friday afternoon.  Actress Linda Gray, who played the part of Sue Ellen in Dallas, was with him at his bedside.  Commenting on his death, Linda said,

#quote#Larry Hagman was my best friend for 35 years,' said Ms Gray in a statement released by her agent.  He was the Pied Piper of life and brought joy to everyone he knew. He was creative, generous, funny, loving and talented and I will miss him enormously.  He was an original and lived life to the full.#/quote#

Hagman spent over ten years playing stetson-wearing JR Ewing, a cunning and manipulative oil tycoon and patriarch in Dallas, who became an iconic face across the world.  Watched by an estimated 300 million viewers across 57 countries, it became one of the most successful TV series in history.

After revealing his alcoholic excesses in his biography, Hello Darlin', the iconic actor was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in 1992, and went on to have a liver transplant in 1995.  However, Hagman continued to drink secretly, and was forced to have an additional operation in 2003 to save his life.

In October last year the actor discovered he had a tumour on his tongue, and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer.

Earlier this year Hagman appeared in the new 10-episode series of Dallas.  A second series is set to run in 2013.
