The Roald Dahl adaptation of Matilda was a big winner at the Whatsonstage.com awards, with four prizes awarded at the London event.

The audience-voted awards ceremony awarded Matilda the Musical four prizes including Best New Musical, Best Choreographer for Peter Darling, London Newcomer of the Year for Tim Minchin and Best Set Design for Rob Howell.

Matilda the Musical director, Matthew Warchus, said the four children who starred in the production were 'its trump card and its heart'.

'Those four Matildas who perform are a real problem for me, because each time I watch the show I'm reduced to tears,' said Warchus.

Matilda was nominated 9 times and won 4 awards, the production is proving to be a huge hit with West End audiences.

The 12th annual Whatsonstage.com awards show was held at London's Prince of Wales Theatre, with many West End stars attending.

National Theatre slapstick comedy transfer One Man, Two Guvnors bagged three awards, including best actor for James Corden.

'I share this [award] with every other actor in our show,' said Corden. 'They are all brilliant and there's no such thing as best, but I'm pleased that some of you thought it might have been me.'

War Horse was named best West End show and the theatre didn't disappoint, bringing it one of the full-sized horse puppets on stage as a surprise.

Danny Boyle was awarded best director for his production of Frankenstein, which saw Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating roles between Frankenstein and his Creature.

Ghost the Musical was awarded three prizes including a best actor award for Richard Fleeshman, while Shrek stars Amanda Holden and Nigel Harman were recognised for their acting abilities.

'I've been around for a bit but newcomer implies that I like doing new stuff and that the industry expects me to keep doing stuff in the London theatre world, which I really hope I can do,' said Tim Minchin upon accepting his prize for Matilda.
