McElderry wins Popstar to Operastar

Joe McElderry was celebrating until the early hours celebrating his Popstar to Opera Star win.

Who would have thought the 2009 X-Factor winner Joe McElderry would shine in Popstar To Operastar, but that is exactly what he did. Wowing audiences and judges with his powerful voice he went on to be crowned this years Popstar to Operastar on ITV last night.

The star who was on the verge of stardom until he was dropped by Simon Cowell earlier this year, showed everyone that he has still got the X-factor.

For six weeks Joe has battled through the ITV competition fighting off the other contestants including, Midge ure, Andy Bell from Erasure, Toploader singer Joe Washbourn, Claire Richards from Steps, Jocelyn Brown, and the Pussycats Doll Melody Thornton.

Last night the X- Factor winner went head-to-head with Bucks Fizz member Cheryl Baker and belted out a solo piece made famous by Pavarotti during the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. He sang along side the Popstar To Operastar Judge Rolando Villazon with their version of Nessun Dorma.

He won the final with viewers votes, and Joe's loyal fans voted in their masses. Just moments after the results were given, Joe tweeted his 220,000 followers saying ' Whoop!, We did it! Thank you so much to everyone that voted! So excited and happy!'

McElderry was the bookies favourite to win the singing competition, although Joe appeared slightly concerned over Cheryl's reaction to not winning the show herself.

Cheryl Baker admitted 'I didn't expect to get this far and he's fantastic', adding ' I had my money on Joe from the beginning.'

Joe has hinted this weekend that he may soon be releasing a new studio album following his success on the ITV show.
