Andy Murray breezed through his Australian Open quarter final with Kei Nishikori winning 6-3 6-3 6-1 to progress through to the semi finals where he could meet No.1 seed Novak Djokovic, should the Serb beat David Ferrer.

Murray was on court for a little over two hours in beating the No.24 seed who had surprised many by beating Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round.

Nishikori put up stiff resistance in the first set which lasted 55 minutes, one rally lasting 42 shots before Murray was able to win it. Murray took control from set two onwards and the result was never in doubt.

After the match Murray declared himself satisfied but claimed that there was room for improvement. 'It was tough. I didn't serve well but the returning was good' the Scot said.

'It was a good match, a lot of fun points, most of them he was winning so I was trying to keep them as short as possible' Murray added.

Murray's victory means that he has qualified for the semi finals in the last five Grand Slam tournaments, although he has yet to actually win one.

With No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal and No.3 seed Roger Federer already through to Friday's semi finals Murray will have to beat probably world No.1 Djokovic and then either Nadal or Federer - a massive ask, but one of which he is capable.
