On the back of its once more growing popularity in the UK, British American football fans have received another shot in the arm with the NFL's announcement that the St Louis Rams will play one of their home games at Wembley in each of the next three seasons.

In October 2012 the Rams will take on the New England Patriots, who lost the recent Superbowl to the New York Giants. Patriots owner, Robert Kraft has declared his team's excitement to be playing in London.

Late last year the NFL confirmed its commitment to the International Series that has seen an NFL regular season game at Wembley every year since 2007. In October last year the Chicago Bears beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were on of the franchises believed to be interested in continuing their contact with the UK.

Despite a legal dispute involving the St Louis Rams and their home stadium lease details, it will be the Rams who will get to call London home for at least one game each season. The Rams already have a London connection as their owner, Stan Kroenke, is the majority shareholder at Arsenal.

The Patriots, probably the NFL's most successful franchise of recent years and certainly the UK's favourite NFL team, have already experienced Wembley and its famous turf when they played Tampa Bay in 2009.

As the game expands its fan base in the UK serious talk of a permanent franchise based on these shores has been had. Whilst the NFL is examining a possible expansion, with Los Angeles a certainty to become an NFL city once more, the second expansion location (an expansion of one team is not an option according to reports) could provide a unique opportunity for London.

Britevents.com has tickets to most NFL games in the US so if you're an American football nut like me, make sure you catch the action when holidaying in the States.
