Poetry Society's funding held NEWS

Poetry Society's funding held

Arguments and committee member departures have caused Arts Council England to postpone funding of £78,500 to the Poetry Society.

The society has been affected by recent divisions caused by arguments over how to best spend the grant awarded in March. The troubles have seen the society's president, director and others resign.

Arts Council England said the upheaval meant the Poetry Society did not comply with its funding agreement. The Arts Council have told the society it must 'get its house in order' urgently.

At a meeting a week ago, the entire board of trustees decided they would stand down. Subsequently, a new board will be elected in September.

'We hope that the forming of a new board will signal the start of a rapid return to stability for the society, so that it can work with the Arts Council to help achieve its ambitions for the poetry sector' a statement from the Arts Council said.

Due to the arguments and instability, the society is currently unable to adhere to its funding agreement of 'governance, management and leadership, reputational risk and reasonable care' the Arts Council added.
