Despite the death of his character at the end of the first film, Will Smith is determined to return in a sequel to I Am Legend, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Warner Bros studios have hired screenwriter Arash Amel to create a follow-up to the first film, which saw a small community survive the extremely destructive zombie-like virus that plagued the world.

The 2007 film made an impressive £368m in box office takings across the world, but received mixed reviews amongst critics. An alternative ending, which is shown in the DVD version, was a brighter future for Smith's character who actually survived. The alternate ending is a good basis for a sequel, otherwise another option could be a prequel to I Am Legend.

After a quiet few years playing roles in the two films Hancock and Seven Pounds, Smith will return to the screen as Agent J in Men in Black 3 this year.
