In a surprising development Carlos Tevez is on his way back to Manchester from Argentina with the intent of returning to playing duties, despite manager Roberto Mancini once saying he would never play for the club again and Tevez alleging that Mancini spoke to him 'like a dog'.

Tevez, City's top scorer last season, has not played for the Etihad club since the spat following his refusal to take the pitch in City's Champions League tie at Bayern Munich. Tevez was later disciplined by the club and fined. He has been in Argentina, without the club's permission, since November and has not been paid in that time.

However, somewhat surprisingly, Tevez has stated his intent to return to City and resume his playing career, although he apparently still refuses to accept his guilt in declining to play in that match against Munich, repeating his oft stated version, that he merely refused to warm up a second time.

In the recent transfer window Tevez was openly shopped around and, despite interest from AC Milan, Inter Milan and Paris St Germain, no deal was struck and City were stuck with the player, a diminishing asset.

The club and player stand to benefit from his resumption of on-field duties in that committed performances from Tevez, still one of the world's top strikers, for the season's remainder could see a permanent transfer become a reality in the summer. His value would return to something like its true level and Tevez would get the move he craves.

However, it remains to be seen what kind of reaction Tevez will receive from the club, the manager Mancini and, probably most importantly, the fans, many of whom have voiced their disgust at his actions.

City currently lead the Premier League but the addition of another top notch forward would still be a boost as they push for their first league title since the 1967-68 season.
