The Artist, who had been the bookies' favourite, scooped seven awards at the 2012 Baftas: best film, best actor best director, best original screenplay, original music, best costume design and best cinematography.

The seven awards equalled the number won by The King's Speech last year and Slumdog Millionaire in 2009. The record of awards won in one night is still held by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with nine Baftas.

Meryl Streep's win came as no surprise, who was awarded best actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Streep thanked the producers for 'asking and expecting so much of me', saying she was very proud of the film.

The best actor award came as a surprise with Gary Oldman as George Smiley widely tipped for the prize.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won two awards: best British film and best adapted screenplay. Tongue-in-cheek, writer Peter Straughan joked: 'I would like to thank The Artist for not being adapted from a book.' He dedicated the prize to his late wife and co-adapter who died before the film was completed.

82-year-old Christopher Plummer won best supporting actor for his role as an elderly gay father in Beginners.

The best animated feature film award was won by Rango, a quirky tale of a chameleon in the wild west, voiced by Johnny Depp.

Hugo, widely tipped for the Oscars, won best production design and sound.

Martin Scorsese was presented with Bafta's highest honour, a fellowship, for a lifetime of films. Bafta chairman, Tim Corrie, said: 'Martin Scorcese is a legend in his lifetime; a true inspiration to all young directors the world over. We are delighted to honour his contribution to film history.'
