THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES A DDOS production for the Arts Alive Festival 20 NEWS

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES A DDOS production for the Arts Alive Festival 20

Unique adaption using physcial theatre and puppetry of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel as part of Arts Alive Festival.

The award-winning Dorking Dramatic & Operatic Society (DDOS) is thrilled to premiere society member Robert Hamilton's adaption of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's much loved novel. The unique production will be performed at the intimate setting of the Green Room Theatre from the 21st to the 25th October.

The Hound of the Baskervilles tells of the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin who stalks the heir to Baskerville Hall in Dartmoor, Devon. DDOS presents the case as investigated by the inimitable Sherlock Holmes and his companion, Dr Watson using puppetry, movement and special effects.

Dorking resident and writer of this adaptation, Robert Hamilton, who is playing Dr Watson in the DDOS production, explains why he was inspired to adapt Sir Arthur's original novel and to capture the true spirit of the gothic genre,

"I have loved 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' since I first read the book as a teenager and I'm both excited and grateful to have had the opportunity to adapt the story for the Green Room. Sherlock Holmes is one of literature's greatest and most accessible creations and has had a long relationship with the stage as well as television and films. 'The Hound' is the most popular of all Doyle's adventures, with the story's elements of gothic horror, folklore and pure adventure. We're working hard to make the story live in an immersive staging that will use all the potential that our lovely theatre has to offer and will, I think capture all the thrills and horror of Conan Doyle's original 'creeper', as he called it!"

Director Sandra Grant discusses her ambition to direct a play as part of Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival that encourages the actors to learn new performance skills. She states that "this production allows the actors to experiment with traditional acting techniques interspersed with puppetry, movement and special effects. Professional performers were invited to rehearsals, helping the actors to practice these skills. The specially commissioned hound is a spectacular diabolical creature - the first time DDOS has mixed puppetry and digital projection on stage. I hope audiences at the Green Room Theatre will enjoy this Sherlock Holmes mystery, as much as we have enjoyed rehearsing it."

'The Hound of The Baskervilles' will be performed at The Green Room Theatre, situated behind The Dorking Halls, Dorking from Tuesday 21st October to Saturday 25th October at 7.45pm each night.

Tickets for Tuesday 21st are only 10, with tickets for Wednesday 22nd to Saturday 25th at 14 (12 for Members of DDOS). To book tickets for this production please call the Dorking Halls Box Office on 01306 881717.
