The Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher dies aged 87

Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died this morning following a stroke. The 87 year old Baroness died peacefully following a stroke this morning. Her daughter Carol and son Mark announced the news this morning.



Baroness Thatcher's children Carol Thatcher and Mark Thatcher announced their mother had died peacefully following a stroke this morning.

The 87 year old former Conservative Prime Minister had been suffering from poor health and dementia. In 2002 she had suffered a number of small strokes and had been advised not to accept any public speaking engagements.

She had also been admitted to hospital just before Christmas last year to remove a growth from her bladder, she was discharged before the New Year.

Lord Bell, former spokesman to the Baroness said: 'It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning. A further statement will be made later', reported the Huffington Post.

Speaking to Sky News this morning, Lord Bell said of the Iron Lady:#quote#We'll never see the likes of her again. She was one of the great prime ministers of all time and transformed people's lives.#/quote#

He went on to describe her as on one of the greatest leaders of the Conservative party.

A statement has been released from Buckingham Palace reading:#quote#The Queen was sad to hear the news of the death of Baroness Thatcher. Her Majesty will be sending a private message of sympathy to the family.#/quote#

Downing Street announced that Baroness Thatcher will receive a full ceremonial funeral with honours at St Paul's Cathedral in London. 

Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979 before tearfully leaving No.10 after losing support over disagreements in her party over European Economic Community Policies and the poll tax fiasco in November 1990.
