Tree carvings leave residents stumped

Residents of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire have been left puzzled by elaborate tree carvings, thought to be created by Yorkshire's answer to Banksy.

Standing between 10 and 20 feet high, trees have been transformed into intricately detailed tree carvings of dragons, kingfishers and an eerie figure.

The carvings are thought to have been created by a Banksy-style guerilla artist and are attracting flocks of tourists to the area.

The artist remains anonymous as no one has ever seen them leaving the woods. The carvings started appearing about two months ago and residents would like to thank the artist for creating a new tourist attraction.

'No one has come forward and revealed who it was and it's quite a mystery. It's good publicity for the town as it is like having North Yorkshire's answer to Banksy and it could be another tourist attraction,' said Althea Farmer, chairwoman of the Knaresborough Civic Society.

'One of our members saw a diving kingfisher with a fish in its mouth and said it was absolutely marvellous' she added.

The residents say they are interested to find out who the artist is, but also quite like the fact that no one knows who it is.
