Terrence Malick's drama is back in the race for the Oscars after emerging a surprise contender for the best cinematography award after winning the equivalent prize from the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).

Beating Guillaume Schiffman for The Artist, Jeff Cronenworth for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Hoyte van Hoytema for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Robert Richardson for Hugo, Emmanuel Lubezki was awarded the prize during the annual ceremony in Los Angeles.

Battling against The Artist, Hugo, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and War Horse for an Oscar this year, Lubezki may just win.

It is argued that taking the prestigious ASC prize is not a guarantee for Lubezki in regards to winning an Oscar for the same film, but the winner of the ASC prize has gone on to win an Oscar five times in the past eleven years.

Though The Tree of Life failed to get a single nomination for the BAFTAs, it is nominated for the best film and best director, meaning it may be awarded three Oscars later this month.

The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Texan family in the 1950s. Following the journey of the eldest of three, Jack, the film tells his story from childhood to his disillusioned adult years, focusing on his complicated relationship with his father.

This year's Oscars take place at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on 26 February, hosted by Billy Crystal.
