Singer and actress Whitney Houston has died aged 48, reports the BBC News, on the eve of the Grammy Awards where she was to attend.

US police have reported that Whitney died in her hotel room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles at 23:43 GMT. Beverly Hills paramedics attended the hotel to perform CPR for around twenty minutes prior to announcing her dead. Police say that there was 'no obvious signs of criminal intent'.

Overshadowed by reports of substance abuse and rocky marriage to Bobby Brown, the celebrated singer has been plagued by problems in recent years, and her once perfect voice was said to have been damaged by years of drug use.

Despite being portrayed as the perfect role model in the 80's and 90's, in later years rumours about Whitney abusing drugs began to circulate, and in 2000 airport security discovered marijuana in her and her husband Bobby Brown's luggage as they passed through Hawaii Airport.

Born in 1963, the American singer, producer, actress and model was entered into the Guinnes Book of Records for being the most awarded female act of all time, with awards including six Grammy Awards, thirty Billboard Music awards and two Emmy Awards.

Fellow singer Dolly Parton, whose song was 'I Will Always Love You' was a hit cover for Whitney, paid tribute to her, saying, "I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, 'Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed'."
