When The Woman in Black opened at cinemas, taking in £3.15m, industry experts expected the success to be short-lived. However, due to Harry Potter fans, half term and the popularity of horror films, The Woman in Black remains on top for the second week in a row.

Box office takings are on the up, with an increase of 11%, taking £3.5m in its second week. 10 day takings are said to be £10.49, second to Momentum Pictures' The King's Speech last year which took £10.76m in the same time.

In at second place was Disney's The Muppets, which took £3.41m. The franchise earned higher 10 day takings than the Radcliffe ghost story by £66,000.

Both films are outperforming in the UK compared to the USA, with The Woman in Black grossing a typical UK tally around £4.6, while The Muppets has raked in more in the UK in 9 days than it did in Northern America.

Ghost Rider 3D: Spirit of Vengeance was the only movie debut in the top 10 this week and is the sequel to the original Ghost Rider which opened in March 2007. The 3D sequel is currently at number 3 in the box office top 10.

Stephen Daldry's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close has disappointed UK critics and has walked out of the starting gates with a mere £372,000 across 300 British cinemas. The screen adaptation of Safran Foer's book of the same title stars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, but even its star power failed to muster enthusiasm.

The Artist is back in the UK box office again this week, propelled by its seven Bafta wins, placed at number 9.
