Katatonia began their career in 1987 and were originally named Melancholium, but decided to change their name to Katatonia in 1991.

This Swedish rock/death metal band is notorious for their distinct sound, and melancholy despairing lyrics. The band was brought together by long time friends Jonas Renkse and Anders Nystrom. They identified a darker, more emotional genre to compliment the extreme world of metal music. After many hours of rehearsals and writing songs, the demo was released in 1992 and sold out within hours. This immediately caught the attention of the Dutch label Vic Records, who decided to release a mini CD of the demo. It became apparent overnight that there was a huge amount of people that wanted this style of music. Throughout the 21st century, Katatonia has grown into one of the most cherished heavy metal death bands in the world. They continue to extensively tours and release new albums for their millions of fans worldwide.
