The R&B group from Boston, New Edition, formed in 1978 and started out as a trio before becoming a quintet. They were one of the first of the boy band movement of the 80s and 90s.
After placing second in a local talent show, they were brought to the studio to record their debut album "candy Girl", and the title track went to the top of both the US and UK singles charts. The group's sophomore effort spawned the hits "Cool It Now" and "Mr. Telephone Man". By their fifth studio album, the group had moved on from the bubblegum sound to a smoother, more adult vibe. That album had hits like "Can You Stand The Rain" and "You're Not My Kind of Girl".
In 1985 singer Bobby Brown left to pursue a solo career. In 1988, singer Johnny Gill was recruited, but the group went on hiatus in 1990 and the members went on to work on other projects. All six members of New Edition have reunited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut album and will perform this
summer in the UK as part of a worldwide tour.
