The Sunshine Boys

The Sunshine Boys is a theatre production written by Neil Simon. It was first produced back in 1972 on Broadway. With the play's success, it later inspired a television and film spinoff, with the latter eventually garnering several Oscar nominations. The play revolves around two aging men named Willy Clark and Al Lewis. They once were each other's "better half" in a preciously successful vaudevillian duo aptly called "Lewis and Clark" which was obviously a Lois Lane and Clark Kent pun. In the span of forty years, the relationship of the duo deteriorates to a point that they no longer talk to each other off stage. Clark resents Lewis for opting to abandon the show business, hence sacrificing the duo's career. Fast forward to a few years later, they are then invited to appear in a CBS show to represent the golden vaudevillian era. The cast for the original production includes Jack Albertson (Clark), Sam Levine (Lewis), and Lewis J Stadlen who played Clark's nephew Ben. This year, The Sunshine Boys will have a West End restaging. The preview run will be staged at the Savoy Theatre in April of the current year. The show will have a 12-week limited season. The opening night is set on May 17th and the final show will be on July 28th. The revival will feature the West End debut of acclaimed actor Danny DeVito and Olivier Award recipient Richard Griffiths. This play focuses on fame and friendship, and the delicate dynamics of this precarious combination. Through the characters of Lewis and Clark, who are supposed to be partners, the story dwells on the painful undercurrents of lost trust, loyalty and respect, through deft execution of humor and dead pans. If you want to experience some good laughs that conceal pain and nostalgia just below the surface, The Sunshine Boys is something you might enjoy.
