A new play about the world of competitive parenting where the PTA doesn't just let anyone in - you have to earn the right to join.
Their enterprising and sometimes shocking approach to fundraising exploits the deep frustrations and struggles of being a mum, with highly lucrative results.Into this world of competitive parenting drops Jacs, a savvy city type who’s looking to make an impression. But this PTA doesn’t let just anyone in - you have to earn the right to join the committee.
Does Jacs have what it takes to assume her place in the parental pecking order or will feathers fly?
In The Motherhood is a new play by Hayley Pepler, begun when she was a participant on the Birmingham Rep’s Write Away scheme for emerging playwrights in 2013 and developed into a full length play in 2015. The original production was first shown at The DOOR at The Rep on 3rd and 4th November 2015.
With its three truthfully drawn characters and all too familiar scenarios, In the Motherhood presents a sharply accurate representation of the perils of modern parenting. The first day of term, report day, Christmas fayre, end of term play and sports day are the settings of the small but significant dramas that unfold over the course of a school year.
Despite its sharp wit and sometimes blunt honesty, In the Motherhood has a positive message at its heart. It does not seek to judge mothers, but instead explores the external pressures and self-imposed standards put upon them. Its characters celebrate motherhood in all its messy glory, offering support and encouragement to each other, albeit using sometimes unorthodox methods.
