The Haunting of Bisham Abbey Overnight Ghost Hunt

Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, Friday, 10 February 2012 - Saturday, 11 February 2012

The Haunting of Bisham Abbey Overnight Ghost Hunt: Bisham Abbey set amidst the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside is a Grade I listed Tudor Mansion the property has long been known to be haunted and is said to still house the many ghostly residents from its past.

The Abbey has an incredible history and was the traditional resting place of many of the Earls of Salisbury. For the past 800 years the buildings of Bisham Abbey have played host to distinguished guests of royalty and was once even home to Henry VIII. It was also a community house for the Knights Templar. When they were suppressed in 1307 the Abbey's rights were taken over by King Edward II who granted them to various relatives.

Queen Elizabeth I spent a number of her years of imprisonment here during Bloody Mary's reign although she did later return to the Mansion to visit again this time under happier circumstances.

There have been many reports of Ghostly sightings over the years along with reports of candles burning in the tower room at times when it is known that no one was present there.

Guests staying the night have being woken from their sleep by the sound of footsteps and other strange unexplainable noises. The sound of loud sobbing and crying have also been heard coming from somewhere within the property.

Doors regularly open and close on their own accord and cold spots have been felt by visitors. Spectral lights and orbs have also been witnessed outside in the grounds of the Abbey.

The spectral lights which many people claim to have seen may well be associated with a nearby holy well as the two are often found in conjunction.

It is the latter owner Dame Elizabeth Hoby who has left the most enduring of legacies to the house for it is said that her ghost still walks the corridors here.

The apparition of Dame Elizabeth is often seen dressed in mourning clothes and she is thought to haunt the Great Hall where her portrait hangs. Legend says she wishes to repent the death of her son which she caused through punishment and neglect. When seen she is often described as a photographic negative, with a black face and hands and wearing a white dress.

At the end of the 19th century Admiral Vansittart who at the time was the owner of Bisham Abbey reported an experience that he had one night after he stayed up late playing chess with his brother. He said We had finished playing and my brother had gone to bed. I was standing alone in the great hall where Dame Hoby's portrait hangs. Suddenly I felt that someone was standing behind me and I spun round, just in time to catch a glimpse of the spectral Dame.
