Find out more about Berkshire's famous regicide, Henry Marten, in a talk by expert Dr Manfred Brod.
He has a doctorate from Oxford University and is the author of two books and numerous papers. The period of the Civil War and its aftermath produced many towering political figures, but few as sympathetic as Berkshire’s Henry Marten. An extreme republican, he was an idealist who spent his family fortune in the service of his cause, and a consummate parliamentarian with a gift for repartee. He had political opponents, but never made a personal enemy; friend and foe alike could count on him for help when they were in trouble. His influence ended with Cromwell's coup in 1653, and at the Restoration it was the favours he was owed by Royalists that spared him from execution as a regicide. This talk is the 3rd in a series of 5 themed around the English Civil War this quarter. Book all 5 talks together at the special price of 4. To book - go to 'events' at www.berksfhs.org.uk
