History of Southcote Manor - a talk by Mike Cooper Historic/Heritage

history_of_southcote_manor__a_talk_by_mike_cooper

Following a history degree, he worked as a librarian, with both Reading University and Reading Library. In addition, he has written three books on the history of Reading and has also written and co-written booklets for Reading Libraries, including one on Southcote. Southcote Manor’s history can be traced back to at least the 13th century, and its holders even further back. John Blagrave, the mathematician, occupied the manor in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and it was his nephew, the M.P. Daniel Blagrave, who allowed the Earl of Essex to base his headquarters there during the siege of Reading in April 1643. Find out more, at what is set to be a fascinating talk.

This is the first in a series of five talks this quarter around the theme of the English Civil War, timed to commemorate the 375th anniversary of the Siege of Reading. Buy all five talk tickets for the price of £20 (members £16).

After the talk tea and cake will be served (included within the price). Tickets can be booked at www.berksfhs.org.uk or you may pay at the door (subject to availability). Berkshire Family History Society is a registered charity (number 283010).
