Find out what happened to the ordinary folk of Reading and its surrounding villages when the country descended into Civil War.
Speaker - Catherine SampsonCatherine developed her love of history in childhood and pursued it at University in Sheffield and later Oxford, where she graduated with a Master’s Degree in English Local History. Her dissertation subject being the impact of the Civil War on the local people in and around Reading. A published local and family history author, she is the current Chairman of Berkshire Family History Society. The countryside in and around Reading was horribly affected by the Civil War, and this talk tells the story of what happened to the ordinary folk when the soldiers arrived. How villagers were caught up in the skirmishes, perished as a result of disease, and attempted to stave off financial disaster. Amongst the masses, we can still identify the individual: the husband who hid his valuables, the Pest House occupant who feared the worst, and the fearless individual who published scurrilous pamphlets whilst hiding on the Thames.
This is the second in a series of five talks this quarter around the theme of the English Civil War, timed to commemorate the 375th anniversary of the Siege of Reading. Buy all five talk tickets for the price of £20 (members £16).
After the talk, tea and cake will be served (included within the price).
Tickets can be booked at www.berksfhs.org.uk or in person at The Centre for Heritage and Family History (see website for opening hours). Alternatively, you may pay at the door (subject to availability).
Berkshire Family History Society is a registered charity (number 283010).
