100 years ago an East End immigrant Jewish boy became a General in the Chinese Army and was at the centre of the unification of China.
This is the true story of the incredible life of Morris Cohen; con-man, gambler and charlatan who after imprisonment as a child for pickpocketing was sent away, aged 15, by his despairing family to a distant cousin's ranch in Canada and through a sequence of unlikely events ended up a General in the Chinese Army.
WP Drama are proud to announce the preview of this new work, based on the true story and using much of Morris’ own words, which will be performed at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.
Conceived and directed by Spencer Simmons and written by Spencer Simmons, Brian Seaton and Liam Rand.
Set in a Japanese prisoner of war cell in 1942, Morris, (Jonathan Meyer), tells his cell mate, Seymour Major, (Brian Seaton), the Head of Hong Kong Special Branch, how he acquired his legendary nickname and status as ‘Two-Gun Cohen’. They look to survive brutal interrogations, beatings and an uncertain future by recounting the story not only with humour but with much actual historical fact relating to the situation the world faces today.
As the Wanstead Players, this story was dramatised and performed by us at the Kenneth More Theatre in May 2013 with a cast of five enacting the various incidents and characters. Now lasting 55 minutes, it has been revised and re-imagined in this way.
