Bach St John Passion: Saturday 27 March, 7:30pm

Coslton Hall, Bristol

Bach St John Passion

Bristol Choral Society

Music for Awhile (Margaret Faultless - leader)

Pippa Goss - soprano

Frances Bourne - mezzo-soprano

Joseph Cornwell - tenor (Evangelist)

Christopher Bowen - tenor

Samuel Evans - bass

Warwick Cole - chamber organ

Adrian Partington - conductor

Right from the tempestuous opening chorus, its immediately clear that Bach wanted to explore the dramatic potential in the story of Christs betrayal, arrest, trial and crucifixion. The drama unfolds mainly through the narrative of the Evangelists recitative, but it is punctuated by interjections from other characters and by the vociferous yelling of the mob.

The fast-moving action is checked by occasional arias from the soloists and chorales (hymns) from the chorus which comment upon, or force the audience (congregation) to pause and reflect on the meaning of the unfolding, dramatic events.

Given that the Passion was commissioned by the Church for Holy Week 1724and was intended to form part of a servicethis element of reflection was central to the work, frequently using Lutheran hymn tunes (here, strikingly harmonised) to provide a simple, direct musical style which contrasts with the intricacies of the beautiful arias.

Once again, we are joined by baroque specialists, Music for Awhile, and a distinguished group of soloists, headed by renowned tenor Jopseh Cornwell as the Evangelist.

Tickets, priced £9 - £21, are available now from 0117 962 4991 or the Colston Hall box office: http://www.colstonhall.org/whatson/Event959
