This course will focus on the specific knowledge required to translate and commercialise genomics research, for example the type of IP (e.g. database rights, software copyright vs more ’classical‘ patent rights), the history and culture landscape (e.g. navigating the complexities of open source licenses for the benefit of innovation), and the use and sharing of human genetic data, including ethical and policy considerations. This course is designed for a range of professionals involved in exploitation of technologies, such as knowledge transfer/technology transfer professionals, business analysts in the investment community, innovation funders or senior researchers actively involved in translation. As the course has a specific emphasis on highlighting business models and developing spin outs as an exploitation route, it will also be useful to aspiring entrepreneurs. Through this course we aim to help build a community of professionals working in the translation of genomics and informatics.

The content will be delivered through lectures, discussions, case studies and group work. Each session will start with an introduction to the the session followed by discussions of real life examples, relevent case studies and group work.
