Northwich Salt Museum

Northwich Salt Museum, Northwich, Cheshire, CW98AB

Northwich Salt Museum: Salt has been produced in Cheshire for over 2,000 years and it is the only place in Britain where it is still produced on a large scale. The original museum was established by Thomas Ward & John Brunner two local salt proprietors who felt that Northwich needed something to explain it's importance as the 'salt capital of the world'.

A visit to the Salt Museum begins with a short introductory film which sets the scene for the galleries. Visitors are then directed upstairs. At the top of the stairs is our new Salt of the Earth gallery, which takes visitors on a walk through Cheshire's past. The River Weaver gallery tells the story of the River Weaver and the lives of those who worked and lived alongside it.

The salt gallery shows how salt has been produced in Cheshire for over 2, 000 years. Made from Salt explores some of the 14,000 uses of salt, from mummies to polythene. .
