Caerhays Castle Gardens: Caerhays Castle, which is owned by the Williams family is located in a sheltered valley overlooking Porthluney Cove on the South Cornish Coast equidistant from Truro and St Austell. Caerhays has been an estate which, until 1955, has very much kept itself to itself. From 1370 - 1840 it had been owned by the Trevanion family.
Caerhays is one of the finest Gardens in the United Kingdom. The Williams family led the way in the 19th and 20th centuries by introducing new species of magnolia, rhododendron, and camellias into this country as well as other spring flowering shrubs. Some of these plants, particularly the asiatic magnolias and michelias are well over 100 years old and look spectacular in their setting. Caerhays must be the first stop on a tour of Cornish Gardens. Caerhays is very much a spring garden and is at its best in March, April and May. The garden is ONLY open at present for these complete 3 months (7 days a week). The castle, where the family still live is only open for more limited periods so please do check opening times carefully. .
