Launceston Steam Railway: The Launceston Steam Railway links the historic Cornish town of Launceston with the hamlet of Newmills. Trains are hauled by steam locomotives built to a famous design by the Hunslet Engineering Company in the late 1800's. Tickets are valid all day, so you can have as many rides as you like, or break your journey for a picnic, walk or visit to the riverside Farm Park (seperate admission charge) at Newmills. At Launceston Station there is a Museum, Cafe, and well stocked shop and bookshop. Also at Launceston are the remains of an Augustinian Priory, which can be viewed by railway visitors.
With a train every 40 minutes or so, many passengers choose to enjoy a picnic or a walk in the valley, and return on a later service. The guard will stop the train, on request, at Hunt's Crossing.
Your train is hauled by narrow gauge (2' 0") locomotives built in Victoria's reign, you can ride in open or closed carriages depending on the weather; whatever you choose, you are assured of a marvellous view. A seat in the front of the train is as good as being on the footplate.
A recent arrival at the railway is a pair of trains from Mail Rail, which was the Royal Mail's underground railway in London used for transporting mail around the capital quicky. .
