Looe Monkey Sanctuary

Looe Monkey Sanctuary, Looe, Cornwall, PL131NZ

Looe Monkey Sanctuary: The Monkey Sanctuary has been home to a colony of Amazonian woolly monkeys since 1964. It was established to provide a stable setting for woolly monkeys rescued from lives of isolation as pets. The Sanctuary is home to a colony of 14 woolly monkeys. They are 3rd and 4th generation descendants of monkeys who were rescued in the 60's and 70's after being captured in the wild and brought to England as pets.

Visitors can watch the monkeys forage and play in the trees and listen to their keepers describing the monkeys lives and explaining their behaviour. This allows visitors to gain a true insight into the personality and social life of these amazing creatures.

At The Monkey Sanctuary, keepers are around all day to talk to visitors. Children learn how woolly monkeys are adapted to life in the rainforest and their role in the Amazon food web. Talking to the keepers, exploring the discovery trail and being creative in the Activity Room all add up to a fascinating day.

Our gardens are designed to be attractive to both visitors and wildlife. Sheltered and surrounded by Beech and Sycamore woodland, the gardens are situated on a south-facing slope overlooking Looe bay and have through the years been divided into different areas to attract various species of plants and animals.
