Trebah Garden: Welcome to a spectacular 26 acre Cornish ravine garden, rated among the 80 finest gardens in the world. This sub-tropical paradise is home to a unique collection of rare and exotic plants, trees and shrubs winding down to a private and secluded beach on the Helford River. Over one hundred years of planting has created a magnificent garden with colour all year round.
Trebah (pronounced Tree-b) is Celtic for 'The House on the Bay' and is first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as the property of the Bishop of Exeter. For the next 745 years it passed through the hands of minor members of the Cornish Squirarchy and Yeoman farmers until it was acquired in 1831 by the Fox family of Falmouth.
The Garden has been planted with seeds and plants from all over the world. Here are details of some of the plants of interest architecturally or for their scent, which can be seen in the garden. Some of the specimens are the most spectacular to be found growing in the open in mainland Britain.
Trebah boasts excellent visitor facilities in the stylish, award winning £1. 5 million Hibbert Centre. A modern design reminiscent of a tea or rubber planter's bungalow, has a verandah overlooking the sub-tropical planting below. The Gallery Shop, Garden Shop and Planters Cafe occupy inter connecting spaces full of light and airiness.
Despite its size, the centre is cleverly landscaped into the hillside and the huge copper roof is barely visible from the garden below, while the whole visual impact is softened by abundant planting.
Open every day 10. 30am 5. 00pm (last admission), with the garden closing at 6. 30pm. During the winter season last admission is at dusk. The Garden is open every day of the year. The shops and Planters Cafe are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day only. .
