Eden Project

The Eden Project, St Austell, Cornwall, PL242SG

Eden Project: The Eden Project, set in an amazing location in the heart of Cornwall, gives you a unique view of the world of plants and human society. The Eden Project is the largest greenhouse ever built, the size of 30 football pitches.

There are two massive conservatories:

The Humid Tropics Biome:

This Biome, the largest conservatory in the world, is 240 m long, 110 m wide and 50 m high. It contains over 1,000 plant species, which have shot up since they were planted (from September 2000 on), and we've lost less than 5%. Jungle trees race up to the light, some growing several metres a year. Climbers hitch a ride and epiphytes, such as orchids and ferns, live high in the living skyscrapers.

Warm Temperate Biome:

Halfway between our wet green woods and the world's deserts are the warm temperate Mediterranean regions, characterised by hot dry summers and cool wet winters. Plants have spines, waxy evergreen leaves or small, grey, hairy leaves, all of which serve to protect. Shrubs are more common than trees, bulbs hide below the summer-scorched soil, and annuals bloom in a riot of colour after winter rains.

In this Biome the air is kept between 15 and 25C in the summer and a minimum of 9C in the winter. Breathe in . . . The scent comes from the plants' protective oils. .

It's no surprise that most of the top 10 visitor attractions in Britain are in our capital city, London. However, with Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Alton Towers bucking the trend, there's much to be seen outside of London. Why not take a look.

Despite our rich heritage, vibrant culture and modern tastes in entertainment, Britain is prone to a bit of rain. Actually, make that a LOT of rain. Nevertheless, when the heavens open there's still plenty to do undercover. We take a look at what's available when the weather turns inclement.

FEATURETandem skydive with Red Letter Days

Throwing yourself out of a plane at 10,000 feet might be considered utter madness. But if close friends start wondering aloud about your sanity (or the contents of your will), you can reassure them that you'll be attached (literally) to an expert instructor and that, frankly, you're in for an experience so exhilarating that you'll probably never stop talking about it.
