Welcome to County Fermanagh

County Fermanagh is one of Northern Ireland’s six counties and covers an area of about 1,700 square kilometers. It borders County Donegal to the north-west, County Leitrim to the west, County Cavan to the south west, County Monaghan to the south east and County Donegal to the north west. The county town is Enniskillen and there is a total population of about 58,000. Often known as Ireland’s Lake District, County Fermanagh is home to some of Ireland’s greatest natural wonders including Fermanagh Lakelands and a patchwork quilt of wetland, parkland, woods and forest and incredible wetlands.

Historically, County Fermanagh has been populated for thousands of years. It was a stronghold of the Maguire Clan from the 13th century before being divided, like the five other escheated counties, among the Scottish and English (and some native Irish) undertakers. It was made into a county by statute during the reign of Elizabeth I and was finally brought into civil government during the Plantation of Ulster. As such, it is packed full of historic sites, from the famed stone Janus Statues (over 2000 years old) on Boa Island to the Drumskinny Stone Circle, a bronze age site with 39 stones set in a circle representing the seasons, moon and sun; and from the delightful medieval Enniskillen Castle to the monastic ruins of the 12th century Augustinian Abbey on Devenish Island, to the beautiful 18th century Florence Court House and Forest Park.

For more natural wonders there are of course the famous Lakelands offering some of the best and most breathtaking cruising, canoeing and windsurfing in all of Europe as well as the magical underworld of Marble Arch Caves, and scenic drives with cliff-top views for hundreds of miles to the distant mountains of Donegal. Fermanagh is a county of wide open horizons and outdoor thrills.
